Neillsville Downs Greenwood In ECC Baseball

The Neillsville baseball team improved to 4-1 on the season and ended Greenwood's conference winning streak at 39 with a 5-1 win over the Indians on Tuesday.

The Warriors only had 3 hits against Greenwood ace Wes Wuethrich, but they took advantage of runners when had them. Neillsville scored 1 run in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the third and 1 more in the seventh. Jason Kurth, Nathan Peterson and Nolan Matson had Neillsville's hits. Jacob Kunze had an RBI on a ground out to third in the 2nd inning.

Wuethrich finished with 14 strikeouts and 2 walks for Greenwood. Sophomore, Neal Matson got the start for Neillsville and he retired the first 9 Indian batters he faced, despite giving up a single in the 2nd to Kody Learman who was cut down at second trying to steal. Matson gave up 4 hits while striking out 6 and walking one. Neal also picked off a couple of runners at 2nd base, one in the 4th and one in the 5th.

It was the first time Neillsville beat Greenwood in baseball since May 14th of 2010. Neillsville improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern Cloverbelt while Greenwood falls to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
