Eastern Cloverbelt Spring Sports Update

Monday, April 15th, 2013 -- 11:21 AM

There was an emergency meeting of Cloverbelt Conference athletic directors on Friday, and Neillsville AD Mark Craig says the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference baseball conference games will now start on April 25th.

Neillsville is scheduled to host Colby on the 25th, and the conference baseball schedule will be a 9 game season with every team in Eastern Cloverbelt playing each other only once. Any games that can be played before April 25th will be counted as non-conference games.

As far as girl?s softball, the games are cancelled up to this Friday, but the schedule for next week has not been affected yet. The Neillsville girl?s softball season will tentatively start on April 23rd against Spencer. Anything that was scheduled before the end of this week will be scheduled as doubleheaders later.

This of course is all depending on the fact that fields dry out and the weather gets better. There are some built-in make up dates in May, but Mr. Craig says some of those dates have already been used from games that have already been cancelled. Some games may have to be scheduled in the week leading up to the state tournaments in May.

The state girls softball tournament starts a month from this Tuesday, May 16th and the state baseball tournament starts on May 24th which means a lot of games in the next month will have to scheduled and that means a number of games each week. Craig says some schools have even gone into Illinois and Iowa just to play some non-conference games.

When asked if the WIAA has considered moving anything around as far as the state tournaments, he said they had not heard anything about extending the seasons and he doubts if the WIAA would do that.

The boys golf and the outdoor track and field seasons have also been affected by the weather. Neillsville's golf team was supposed to start on April 8th. They do have a match scheduled for April 23rd.

The boys and girls track teams were to have an outdoor meet Tuesday at Spencer but that has been cancelled. Mr. Craig has been working on possibly getting some indoor meets at the Fieldhouse for this week.
