Milwaukee Riverside 55, Mukwonago 41
Milwaukee Riverside (24-4) won its first State girls basketball championship with a 55-41 win over Mukwonago (25-3) in the Division 1 final Saturday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
The first quarter featured five lead changes and two ties. The Lady Tigers led at the end of the period 12-11. Neither team could establish any sort of run in the second quarter with the largest advantage for either side being a three-point edge by the Indians at 16-13 with 6:40 to play in the half. Milwaukee Riverside tied the game with a three-pointer by Amani Wilborn on the ensuing possession and led at the half, 23-21.
In the second half, the Lady Tigers began to take control of the game by extending its lead to seven on two separate occasions in the third quarter and led 38-31 entering the fourth quarter. Milwaukee Riverside opened a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and built its largest lead of the game at 55-41 with 45 seconds to play.
The Lady Tigers were led by Wilborn and Alona Johnson with 15 points apiece. Mukwonago was led by Amber Gray and Bre Cera with 11 points each.
Division 2
Notre Dame 42, New Berlin Eisenhower 33
Notre Dame (23-6) won its second State championship with a 42-33 win over New Berlin Eisenhower (25-3) in the Division 2 title tilt Saturday evening at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
A pair of three-pointers ignited the Triton offense to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams found points hard to come by in the second quarter. The Tritons put just five points on the board, allowing the Lions to reduce their deficit to 19-17 at the half.
The Lions came out roaring in the second half with the first seven points to take a 24-19 lead, but Notre Dame responded with a 9-2 run in the final 5:22 seconds of the period to take a 28-26 lead into the final quarter.
The Tritons broke a 28-28 tie with a bucket and free throw by Brianna Bryne with 5:55 remaining in the game, it was a lead they would not relinquish. They made 7-of-10 free throws and two high percentage shots in the final five minutes to build their biggest lead of the game at 11 points with 11 seconds to play.
Notre Dame was led by Anika Johnson with 11 points and eight rebounds, and Byrne added 10 points. The Lions were led by Jenny Weiland with 12 points.
Division 3
Kewaunee 60, East Troy 58
Defending champion Kewaunee (27-1) captured its second straight Division 3 crown with a dramatic 60-58 win over East Troy (26-2) Saturday afternoon at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
Alex Richard sunk a lay-up off a brilliant pass from Jill Kleiman with one second remaining to win the game.
The Trojans owned the first quarter to open a 17-4 lead with 1:02 remaining in the first period. The Storm began to blow in at the end of the period and into the second quarter with an 11-4 run to get back to within six points with 4:26 left in the half. East Troy held off the initial Storm surge, and led 32-23 at the half.
Kewaunee went on a 10-0 midway through the third quarter to draw within a point of tying the game at 1:10 remaining in the game, but the Trojans scored on a lay-up at the third quarter horn to take a 44-40 lead into the fourth period.
Kewaunee?s Kelsey Stangel drained a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter to tie the game for the first time since early in the first quarter at 46-46. She then gave the Storm a 48-47 lead with a lay-up at 5:27. Trailing by three with 39 seconds remaining, Rachel Atchison hit a 3-pointer for East Troy to tie the score at 58 and set up Richard?s heroics.
Division 4
Algoma 46, Colfax 30
Algoma (26-2) won its third State championship by defeating Colfax (26-2) 46-30 in the Division 4 title game Saturday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
The first quarter was tightly contested throughout the period, with three ties and five lead changes. Colfax held a 13-11 advantage at the end of the quarter. The second quarter offered much of the same with Algoma owning the largest lead of the half at four points at the 5:40 mark. The Wolves took a 22-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Kennedy Blahnik scored on jumper and Baleigh Delorit nailed a three-pointer to start the second half to give Algoma a 27-20 lead. The Wolves began to distance themselves from the Vikings in the fourth period when Anna Dier hit a jumper from short range to give Algoma a double-digit advantage with 5:18 to play at 34-23. They increased their lead to 46-29, their largest of the game, later in the period.
Blahnik led the Wolves with 17 points and eight rebounds. Braana Steen led the Vikings with 12 points.
Division 5
Assumption 39, Barneveld 35
Assumption (28-1) won its first State title with a 39-35 victory over Barneveld (27-2) in the Division 5 championship game Saturday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
The Royals trailed only once in the game; that came early in the first quarter. A pair of 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the first period created a 14-7 advantage for Assumption to start the second quarter.
The Royals built an 11-point bulge in the second quarter before the Golden Eagles cut the lead to seven with just over a minute to play in the half, but Assumption scored the final four points of the period to take a 24-13 lead at halftime.
The same theme occurred in the third quarter with Assumption upping its lead to 13 only to have the Golden Eagles claw back to within six points but no tighter. Assumption failed to score a field goal during an 11-minute span in the second half. The Golden Eagles tied the game with 3:13 to play, but Gena Grundhoffer converted four clutch free throws and a lay-up down the stretch to win it for the Royals.
Grundhoffer led the Royals with 10 points, and Mary Sigler added nine points before fouling out with 3:13 to play in the game. Barneveld was led by Rachel Slaney with 10 points.
