Individuals Wrestle For State Tournament Titles

The 70th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament will be held this Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 21-23, at the Kohl Center in Madison.

ALL MATCHES STREAMED LIVE: All six mats of the pre-finals matches and the three mats of the finals will be streamed live on foxsportswisconsin.com.

FINALS ON FS WISCONSIN: The championship finals for all divisions will be aired tape-delayed on FS Wisconsin. The Division 1 title bouts are scheduled to air March 31 at 2 p.m. The Division 2 championship match is scheduled to air March 22 at 9 p.m., and the Division 3 championship match will air March 17 at 5 p.m. Please check local cable listings for the FS Wisconsin channel in your area.


2013 TOURNAMENT BY THE NUMBERS: There will be champions crowned in 14 weight classes in three divisions. Wrestlers who finished first or second in each weight class at last weekend?s eight Division 1 sectionals qualified for the State Tournament. The top three finishers in each weight class at the four Divisions 2 and 3 sectionals qualify for the tourney. There are 224 qualifiers for the championships in Division 1 and 168 in both Divisions 2 and 3. There are 231 schools represented at this year?s individual championships, including 87 from Division 1, and 72 in both Division 2 and Division 3.

Bay Port, Burlington and Kaukauna boast having qualified the most wrestlers to the field in Division 1 with eight. Oconomowoc is next in line with seven. Ellsworth and Sparta have qualified the most wrestlers in Division 2 with seven. Amery, Lomira and Luxemburg-Casco are next with six qualifiers. In Division 3, Random Lake has the distinction of having the most qualifiers this season with nine. Coleman is next with eight qualifiers. Lancaster has seven competitors, and Johnson Creek and Weston/Ithaca each have six. There are 19 former champions in the tournament field this year, and 17 seeking to defend the title they won last year.

TOTAL TITLES BY SCHOOLS: Mineral Point has produced the most individual championships with 49. Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln is next with 42, and Stoughton wrestlers have won 41 individual titles. Others with significant totals are Milwaukee South with 39, Athens and Luxemburg-Casco with 32, and Coleman with 28.
