Augusta Tops Neillsville For First Place In ECC

Augusta downed Neillsville 50-49 in boys basketball on Thursday night to take over first place all alone in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference.The first half of the contest in Augusta was a see-saw battle with Neillsville leading by one at the end of one quarter and Augusta leading by 4 at halftime. Augusta led by as many as 9 in the second half but Neillsville battled back and got the lead down to one with 2.9 seconds left. A jumper by Matt Dux at the buzzer went off the rim and Augusta came away with the win 50-49.
The Warriors (6-1, 6-1) were led by Matt Grottke with 13 points, Kyle Hauge and Matt Dux added 10 apiece. Augusta's Joe Whalen led all scorers with 23 points.
Neillsville will host Spencer on Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse.
