Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery in Chippewa Falls, WI on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Mark Edward Shain was born on December 17, 1952 at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, to Arvel A. and Margie J. (Cherry) Shain. He was raised in Cincinnati, graduating from Colerain High School in 1971. After graduation, his family moved to Willard, WI where he began farming. In 1972, Mark attended CVTC in Eau Claire studying fluid power. He was united in marriage to Judith A. Shupe on August 14, 1975 in Neillsville, WI. Mark continued farming in the Willard area until 1996. He then moved to the Town of Eaton, rural Greenwood, where he continued to crop farm until his death. Mark also enjoyed driving semi-truck for Prochnow, Jeff Andrews, and K&S, and drove school bus for the Greenwood and Loyal School Districts.
He was a former member of the Greenwood Jaycee's, a member of the Clark County Republican Party, the Greenwood Car Club, volunteered for the Greenwood Dairy Breakfast, and was always ready to help anyone that needed it. Mark served on the Greenwood School Board, the Clark County Zoning Commission, on the board at Farm Credit Services in Thorp, and was appointed to the State of Wisconsin Auctioneer Board by Gov. Tommy Thompson.
He loved to watch his Cincinnati Reds play baseball, and he even cheered for the Brewers. He was very happy he was able to go to spring training in Arizona this past March to see them both play.
Mark loved spending time with his grandchildren, going to all their sporting events and other activities. This included visiting Carly’s horse, Levi “Sheldon”, almost daily making sure his apple stash was stocked, he got his peppermint fix, and giving Levi a wellness check. He was a wonderful mentor to them. Anytime they needed advice, they knew they could depend on "Grumpy" for help with the answer.
He also enjoyed classic cars, especially his 1955 Chevy Convertible. Mark helped his grandson, Logan, rebuild his `72 Chevelle and worked on many other cars over the years. His annual trip to the Iola Car Show with his grandchildren and friends was always a highlight of his summer.
Mark will be dearly missed by his wife, Judy; his son, Doug (Vicki) Alexander of Waxahachie, TX; his daughter, Cindy (Mike) Kurtenbach of Chippewa Falls, WI; five grandchildren: Madison Alexander, Meghan Stanford, Spencer, Tyler and Carly Kurtenbach; two sisters: Becky Shain Henn of Kenosha, WI, and Barb Shain of Chili, WI; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Logan Kurtenbach; one sister, Harriet Keller; and one brother, Lyle Sparks.
In lieu of flowers, Mark's family asks that donation be given to cancer research in his name or to the Arbor Day Foundation.
