Jack Abel

JACK A. ABEL, age 82, of Neillsville, WI, formerly of Greenwood, WI, passed away at Marshfield Medical Center in Neillsville on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.  Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood.  Rev. Stanislaus Michael Antony will officiate, and burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.  Military rites will be conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post #238.  Pallbearers will be: Dave Gehrmann, Tim O’Neill, Tom Abel, Gary Abel, Scott Abel, Brian Abel, Wendell Ziegler, and Tim Ziegler.  Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30am until time of service.

Jack Adolph Abel was born on July 18, 1942 in Greenwood, WI, to Adolph and Anita E. (Dill) Abel.  He was raised and received his educaton in Greenwood, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1960.  Jack then enlisted into the U.S. Army and served his country until his honorable discharge.  He returned home to Greenwood, and was united in marriage to Elizabeth A. "Betty" Horvat on August 17, 1963 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Throughout the years, Jack held various jobs, including, worked in construction, was a part-time police officer for Greenwood, worked at Greenwood Homes in Greenwood, and Weyerhaeuser in Marshfield, WI, drove school bus for Greenwood Public Schools, but mostly owned his own truck and hauled bulk milk for several years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Greenwood Jaycee's, and served on the Greenwood Fire Department for more than 50 years, and was an EMT.

Jack had many interests, including, hunting, fishing, watching sports, especially the Packers, Brewers and Badgers, camping, bowling, playing cribbage, latch hook, and loved his beer.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Betty, of Neillsville; two daughters: Jeanette (David) Gehrmann of Crystal Lake, IL, and Theresa Abel (Tim O'Neill) of Madison, WI; two granddaughters, Anna and Claire Gehrmann; two brothers: Gary Abel of Racine, WI, and Tom (Lynne) Abel of Greenwood; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister-in-law, Nancy Abel.
