Luella Butterbrodt

Heaven gained an angel and we have lost a woman of grace and kindness.  Mrs. Luella Celia (nee Young) Butterbrodt passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the age of 104.

Luella was born on February 24, 1919, to Alberti “Bert” Enoch Young and Cecilia “Celia” Belle (Clouse) Young.  Luella grew up in Loyal, WI, attended Mack School, and graduated from Loyal High School in 1936 at age 16.  After graduation, Luella worked at the Picus and Bill Relis grocery stores in Loyal before moving to Chicago, where she worked at Republic Tool Company until WW II broke out.  She returned to Loyal and married William E. “Bill” Butterbrodt on April 25, 1942 at Loyal United Methodist Church.  They owned and operated several farms and managed their lands until they transferred their farms and belongings to their son and wife, Chuck and Dianne.  Luella and Bill celebrated 63 years of marriage until Bill died on October 11, 2005.

She had many interests, but especially enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, taught Vacation Bible Study, volunteered at church, and was known for her German potato salad, molasses cookies, angel food cake, as well as many other delicacies.  Luella was also known for her pleasant personality, kindness, grace, beauty, intelligence, and open door.  You never left her door without food or a gift.  Nor did she enter another’s door without bringing something.  Luella enjoyed spending time with her siblings.  She and her sisters were known as the “Young Girls” because they were young at heart and their maiden name was Young.

Luella is survived by her son, Charles “Chuck” (Dianne) Butterbrodt of Spencer; her daughter, Janet “Jan” Butterbrodt and husband Dennis Knickellbein of Oshkosh; four grandchildren: Denise (Chris) Kallas, Troy (Heather) Butterbrodt, Blake (Leah) Knickellbein, Bryce (Amanda) Knickellbein; 10 great-grandchildren: Sophia, Niko, Leo, and Brik Kallas, Georgia and Nathan Butterbrodt, and  Callan, Hayden, Luella, and Josie Knickellbein; her sister, Hazel Rogstad of Marshfield, and her brother, Calvin Young of Tucson, AZ; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; a baby; two sisters: Edith Verhalen and Norma Kuehling; her half-brother, Harold Young; sisters-in-law: Irene Hepner, Loraine Brown, Dahlia Susa, Beverly Stirmel, Marge Young, Doris Butterbrodt, Verna Butterbrodt; brothers-in-law:  Edgar Verhalen, Norman Kuehling, Vernon Rogstad, Allison Butterbrodt, Allan Hepner, John Brown, Robert Susa, Thomas Stirmel; one niece: Alice Dietz; and four nephews: Steven Rogstad, Johnny Brown, Alvin Hepner, and Ronald Hepner.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Loyal United Methodist Church, in Loyal.  Pastor Kathy Jury will officiate, and burial will follow in the Loyal City Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Honorary pallbearer will be Wayne Kuehling. Visitation will be held at church on Saturday, from 12pm until time of service.  She believed that if you have God in your heart, you are never alone.  Luella lived her faith by being kind to all she met and never giving up on hope.  It was an honor to know her, but a great blessing to call her family.  Rest in Heavenly Peace dear beloved Luella.

Luella’s family would like to thank all the caregivers who have cared for her these past years at Neillsville Care & Rehab, Three Oaks Health Services, and Compassus Hospice.
