Lowell Roehl

LOWELL A. ROEHL, age 83, of Loyal, WI, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Clark County Rehab & Living Center surrounded by his loving family.  Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal.  Rev. Daniel Zimmerman will officiate, and burial will follow in Loyal Lutheran Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be: Tayt Brostowitz, Tjaden Brostowitz, Bryce Harder, Devon Roehl, Jackson Roehl and Colten Roehl.  Honorary pallbearer is Cashton Smith.  Military rites will be conducted by the Loyal American Legion Post #175.  Visitation will be held at the church, on Wednesday, from 9am until time of service.

Lowell Arvin Roehl was born in Granton, WI on June 29, 1939 to Russel R. and Frieda L. (Nebel) Roehl.  He was raised on a farm near Chili, WI until 1943, then moved to farm near Loyal.  He worked on a chicken farm for Albert Grimm during high school, graduating from Loyal High School in 1957.  The day after high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Army on May 29, 1957, and was marching 5 days later.  Lowell served 2 years in La Boussac, France until his honorable discharge on May 27, 1959.  He returned home and attended UW-River Falls, pursuing a degree in Agriculture Education and Mathematics.  During the summers he worked for Stickert Roofing in Chili, and for Max Langfeldt Construction in Loyal.  After graduation from college, he was united in marriage to Velora A. Behnke on June 13, 1964.  After their marriage, Lowell worked for Bertz Wood Products, and later started B&R Roofing with Ronnie Braun. He then bought out the other half and it became Roehl Roofing.  They bought a 43-acre farm north of Loyal in 1966, sold it and bought the Hugo Stutte farm south of Loyal in 1967.  Lowell farmed alongside his wife, Velora, and son, Dennis, until selling Dennis and Suzie the farm in 2007.  Lowell continued to help Dennis farm until ill health kept him from climbing on the tractor.

One of the highlights of his farming career was hosting Farm Technology Days in 2022.  From day one of setting up tent city, you could find him on his scooter “inspecting” the work or riding along with his brother, Erlin, on his UTV.  The workers called him the “Inspector” and he was out there every day during the setup and the taking down of tent city.

Lowell was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving as the head usher for 23 years, served on the zoning committee for the Town of Loyal, and served on the Clark County Holstein Association Board.

He had many interests, but especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren; whether it was discussing farming, watching them show cattle, watching his grandkids sporting events, telling stories, playing cards or Chinese checkers.  Each day he would call and talk with each of his children.  Lowell and Velora loved to travel, and spent many evenings taking car rides across the country side.

He is survived by his wife, Velora, of Loyal; his children: Susan (Ron) Cuddie and Dennis (Suzie) Roehl, both of Loyal, Sandy (Chris) Harder of Chippewa Falls, Kristin (Luke) Smith of Neillsville; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother: Erlin (Bonnie) Roehl of Loyal; one sister: Kathleen (Terry) Hammer of New Berlin, WI; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lowell was preceded in death by parents; one brother, Elgin; one granddaughter, Jordyn Roehl; one grandson, Derek Roehl; and his mother and father-in-law, Arthur and Velda Behnke.
