Marshfield Graduate Hired as Wausau School District’s Interim Superintendent

Monday, March 25th, 2024 -- 1:01 PM

(Desiree Fischer, WSAW) The Wausau School Board announced Cale Bushman, a Marshfield graduate, has been hired as interim superintendent of the Wausau School District.

According to Desiree Fischer with WSAW, the decision was made during a special meeting of the school board on Thursday night. Bushman currently serves as the Director of Pupil Services for the Wausau School District.

“The Board of Education unanimously supports Mr. Bushman’s promotion to superintendent and we look forward to working with him in this new capacity starting in July,” said Board of Education Vice President Lance Trollop. “Mr. Bushman’s educational experience and commitment to advancing student learning, achievement, and success make him the perfect fit for this role.”

Based on feedback from school district parents, staff, and community members, the board created a profile for the next superintendent. They say they are confident that Bushman fits that profile.

“I am humbled and honored to serve as the next leader of the Wausau School District following the retirement of Dr. Keith Hilts,” said Bushman. “As a long-time member of the Wausau community, and a proud parent to three daughters who have all received exceptional educations through the district, I have seen firsthand how fortunate we are to have such wonderful schools in our community."

"I am committed to continuously developing our great schools through strong relationships with, and among, our School Board, our staff members, our parents and our students."

"Additionally, I am excited to engage community members and partners in developing and maintaining a top-tier school system. I look forward to working collaboratively with all of our stakeholders to create a long-term vision for our school district that’s built upon integrity and trust."

"While we have some tough conversations ahead of us, there is no doubt in my mind that, by working together, we can identify solutions that position our district for success in the years to come.”

Bushman’s background in education spans more than 20 years; most of which have been spent in the Wausau School District. In addition to serving as the Director of Pupil Services, he was also principal of Wausau East High School, principal of Eau Claire North High School, former Associate Principal of Pupil Services at Wausau West High School, as well as having experience as a Special Education teacher and coach.

A press release from the district says Bushman will officially begin his duties as Wausau School District Interim Superintendent on July 1. He will serve as superintendent for the 2024-2025 school year. Bushman will replace the current superintendent Dr. Keith Hilts, who will retire at the end of the school year.

“This ends our superintendent search. Whether Mr. Bushman will continue in that role for additional years will be determined later in the 24-25 school year. I’m thankful Mr. Bushman is willing to step into this role and I think he will be a great fit for the Wausau School District,” said School Board Vice President Lance Trollop.
