Aspirus Stanley Hospital and Clark County's Eat Right, Be Fit Coalition Announce Funds for Story Walk

Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 -- 1:01 PM

Aspirus Stanley Hospital, in collaboration with Clark County’s Eat Right Be Fit Coalition, is excited to announce the opportunity for communities to apply for up to $4,000 of funding to implement a Story Walk.

“Story Walks are a fun, educational way to get families out of the house and moving,” said Deenah King, Community Health Improvement Lead at Aspirus Stanley Hospital. “The concept is basically a book that is taken apart, laminated, and presented page-by-page along a walking trail allowing residents to both read and engage in physical activity”.

King adds the project aligns with the Eat Right Be Fit Coalition’s goal of developing public spaces to promote physical activity and the hospital’s focus on chronic disease prevention.

“The applicant agency would lead a coordinated community effort to create a Story Walk,” said King. "It will be important that the applicant agency demonstrate their ability to partner with local agencies to make the project a reality."

Examples of eligible applicants and/or partnering organizations include Tech Ed programs through the local school district for the construction of the prototypes, the local library for the book selection, and the municipality’s public works, park, or street department to ensure approved and appropriate placement.

Eligible applicants must be Clark County agencies/organizations. “There is no one way to do a Story Walk. A community can tailor it to their preferences,” said King.

“Kiosks may vary in size and placement. Some are permanently placed in the ground, while others are held to either trees or light poles by brackets and can be removed during the winter.”

Applications are available. Deadline for applications is March 15. The partner community will be notified in April. Questions can be directed to Deenah King.
