The Sounds of Safety: Rumble Strips
Saturday, August 4th, 2012 -- 7:27 AM
Rumble Strips are called "the sounds of safety," and for good reason. For the last five years in Wisconsin, 35 to 40 percent of serious injury and fatal crashes have been due to the combination of run-off-the-road crashes and center-line crashes, with 90 percent of them occurring in rural areas.
This summer, WisDOT is investing about $3 million to grind rumble strips on over 500 miles of state highways, to help prevent roadway departure crashes and reduce associated costs by millions of dollars. Rumble strips alert and redirect drifting drivers through vibrations and rumbling sounds, and can also guide snowplows and other drivers to stay in their lanes during bad weather with poor visibility.
Rumbles provide the ability to significantly reduce fatal and severe injury crashes in Wisconsin.
