Nothing Could Have Been Done in Clark County Accident

Friday, June 22nd, 2012 -- 1:20 PM

-There was nothing the county could have done to prevent a portion of County Road M from washing away, which resulted in the deaths of three people.

Michelle Hartness, Clark County Emergency Management Director says a flash flood went through the area causing a 50 foot wide section of road to collapse and wash away.

The culvert underneath the road showed no signs of wear last week, when a highway mowing crew was around the area.

The county is mandated to inspect bridges every two years, but not mandated to inspect culverts.

When a culvert is wearing out, signs include erosion around the outside and cracking in the road above.

The culvert and section of road that washed away is expected to be repaired within two to four weeks.

Two vehicles did crash into the wash out Wednesday night. The vehicle occupants, Mary Malinowski, 24, of Thorp, Thomas Jurceka, 56, of Milwaukee and Susan Jurceka, 57, of Milwaukee, were pronounced dead at the scene.
