State Rests Its Case in Koula Trial

Friday, June 15th, 2012 -- 3:12 PM

-The state rested its case at 1:45 p.m. yesterday against Eric Koula after more testimony from a financial expert who combed through his finances.

Financial expert Mary Jo Werner testified that Koula owed more than $150,000 to the IRS, credit card companies and on his mortgage.

The expert said he had less than $3,400 between his bank, investment, day trading and retirement accounts. He reported $4,400 monthly living expenses.

Prosecutors argue Koula had the motive to kill his parents, but his attorney, Jim Koby, contends his client was current on his bills and had other ways to secure money.

Koula could have borrowed money from his in-laws and had $1,100 available via a cash advance on his Discover card.

Koula could have sold his Ford F150 or Ford Explorer, two ATVs, snowmobile, West Salem home or the valuables inside if he needed cash.
