Defense Attorneys Say, "No Evidence Linking Koula to Murders"
Thursday, June 14th, 2012 -- 9:02 AM
-Investigators believe Eric Koula used a .22-caliber rifle recovered from a bedroom closet to kill his parents. However, firearms expert William Newhouse testified that he can?t prove if that rifle or one taken from Koula?s house was used in their deaths.
He also can?t say whether they were shot with a rifle or handgun, or even if they were killed by the same firearm.
DNA analyst Margaret Ewing said the lab found forensic material on the .22-caliber rifle from the closet but there was not enough DNA present for more analysis.
State Crime Laboratory forensic scientist Sherry Culhane testified that there is no DNA evidence linking Koula or anyone else to the crime scene.
The prosecutors continued to make Koula look unreliable, but pointing to the lies he told investigators.
Koula denied planting a letter that claimed to frame him for the homicides and signing the $50,000 check that he said was given to him by his father. He now admits to both.
Koula also said he was not struggling financially. His attorney has said Koula had no motive to kill his parents, arguing his client was current on bills, had money in his bank account and a $100,000 line of credit available on his house.
Prosecutors are expected to rest their case today.
