Forensic Document Examiner Says, "Signature Forged"

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 -- 9:56 AM

-Jane Lewis, a retired forensic document examiner with the state Crime Laboratory testified in the Koula trial yesterday.

She compared Dennis Koula?s signature on the check to other examples of his autograph.

?It?s a classic simulation,? she said. ?The person who wrote this made it try to look like Dennis Koula?s genuine signature but did not do a good job.?

Lewis can?t tell who forged the check, but Eric Koula?s attorneys admitted last month that he will testify that he signed the check with his father?s permission.

Koula will testify that he sent himself a note reading only ?fixed you? and slipped it in his mailbox the week after his parents died. His attorney said it was done because he was very upset that investigators had questioned his son in the case.

Investigators on May 27 talked to Koula?s teenage son in a squad car outside of the home about the case.

Prosecutors continue their case today in La Crosse County Court with Koula?s three-hour interrogation video recorded July 29 just before his arrest.
