Jury Selected on Day One of Eric Koula Trial
Monday, June 4th, 2012 -- 3:00 PM
-After several delays the Eric Koula trial has begun. On the first day of the trial, the jury was selected. The process involved each potential member of the jury brought into the courtroom before the judge and attorneys.
Judge Scott Horne would begin the process and ask the possible members what they know about the trial and what source they obtained the information from, be it the media, friends, family, etc., and if they could be an unbiased juror.
The attorneys on both sides would then ask similar questions, but more in depth. That included asking several possible candidates that had past criminal records if they were bitter towards the DA?s office, state attorneys, or law enforcement officials and whether or not it would affect their decision.
Many members were eliminated because of their strong opinions.
A couple common threads between the possible candidates was the timeline given by police, saying that because of La Cross traffic, certain pieces didn?t add up and they had a hard time being unbiased because the media skewed their opinion.
The trial is expected to last a month and opening statements will be given this morning.
