Happy Arbor Day

Friday, April 27th, 2012 -- 10:45 AM

-Today is Arbor Day.

This day is set aside each year for planting trees. The holiday is celebrated on the last Friday of April.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. As a formal holiday, it first was observed in 1872 in Nebraska, but tree planting festivals are as old as civilization. The tree has appeared throughout history and literature as the symbol of life.

I will be attending an Arbor Day ceremony in the village of Spencer at 1 p.m. today in the park at the corner of highways 13 and 98.

The ceremony includes presentation of the flag, pledge of allegiance, reading of Arbor Day proclamation, and presentation by Ivacic family with history and tree planting.
