Greenwood Celebrates Earth Day
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 -- 10:17 AM
-The Greenwood High School celebrated Earth Day yesterday afternoon.Even though the holiday was on Sunday, the different homerooms from each grade went out into the community to clean up residential, municipal, and business yards and to work on projects for the city.
Abbi Roehrborn, the high school science teacher, came up with the idea, when she decided the science department should observe Earth Day. She said, ?It used to just be the science classes going out and cleaning around the school. It took a few years to catch on, but we decided to see if the community would be interested in getting involved.?
The response was very enthusiastic and, since then, the entire school has been going out and cleaning the community for eight years.
Abbi said that the community ?looks forward to it every year. We get calls every spring from residents that want their yards cleaned. It?s something they look forward to.? She also said it wasn?t uncommon for residents to send cards of thanks or to leave the students cookies and snacks.
Abbi said the students ?enjoy getting outside. It?s a wonderful opportunity for them to give back to the community. The community supports their school.?
Besides cleaning, the students usually take time out of the day to do other fun activities, like a kick ball tournament or even a play.
