DNR Officials Urge Caution Before Burning
Monday, March 19th, 2012 -- 8:25 AM
-DNR officials are warning people to use extreme caution before engaging in outdoor activities with the potential for wildfire. They say warm, windy days have contributed to 70 wildfires burning 100 acres in southern and central portions of the state.
Because the snow has melted, burning permits are now required in DNR protection areas. Permits are free and can be obtained from local fire wardens.
Even if you have a permit, officials say you still need to call or visit the DNR website and enter the keyword "fire" each day you plan on burning to find out if there are any restrictions.
Officials say during this time of year, conditions change often and burning permits can be suspended from day-to-day when fire danger elevates due to weather conditions.
They are hoping that rain forecasted for this week will help with the dry conditions.
