Century County

Thursday, February 9th, 2012 -- 1:51 PM

-On Wednesday night a discussion about forming a new central Wisconsin county was continued, but some local residents want more information before making up their minds about the idea.

About 30 people attended a meeting at the Marshfield Public Library to discuss "Century County" ? an proposal to form a new county from portions of Wood, Marathon and Clark counties, with Marshfield at its heart. The idea was first suggested in 1997 by Jeff Kleiman, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County.

After losing traction and going dormant for more than a decade, the plan resurfaced last fall during a dispute between Marshfield and Wood County officials about proposed regulation of the incoming frac sand industry. That debate between leaders in Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids pushed Marshfield City Council member Tom Buttke to seriously consider the Century County idea. He and Ed Wagner, who sits on the Marshfield City Council and Wood County Board, organized Wednesday night's meeting as private residents. Buttke said, "I personally believe (the north-south issue) is there and alive."
