Wausau is one eight sites around the state that The Medical College of Wisconsin is looking at to possibly develop a community-based medical education program to help fill a looming doctor shortage.According to WSAU.com, the feasibility study has been going on since last summer between college officials and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Other locations in our area under consideration include Eau Claire and La Crosse.
The feasibility study will gauge whether local businesses, governments and health care providers support a community-based program. The school could begin with one or two sites as early as 2014 with more sites to follow.
Medical College of Wisconsin spokesman Dick Katschke said they have a goal of preventing a shortage of 2,000 doctors by 2030.
