LOCAL CHURCH CONTINUES UGANDA RELATIONSHIP
Friday, January 27th, 2012 -- 10:34 AM
A Neillsville church is contiuing their relationship with Uganda, one that began back in 2001.According to Martha Opelt, the pilgrimage coordinator, that was the year several pilgrims from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville and others from around the area went to Uganda to build a relationship with the people of that area and also to build a home for a family. From there it progessed into the Clean Water Project, then the building of a new school.
In 2006 the group looked for fundraiser ideas to help their cause and Opelt said that in 2009 one of the pilgrims to Uganda that year, Jeff Reither, formerly of Neillsville, became the host of Trivia Night. Now in its 4th year, Trivia Night has become a fundraiser for the Ugandan effort where teams of 8 compete against each other. This Saturday night 12 teams from around the area will participate to see who wins and gets their team name on a board at the church.
The funds from this years Trivia Night will go toward helping to building a library by the school in Uganda. To help promote and raise funds for the library project, sister Solome of Uganda has been traveling around the state. Another pilgrimage to Uganda is planned for this summer.
