KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN THE COLD

With the coldest temperatures we?ve seen so far this winter upon us this morning, keeping children safe on the way to school and at school is important.Neillsville Schools Transportation Supervisor Dale Erickson says when it comes to getting buses ready it?s about preventative matinenance to make sure they run the right fuel, they don?t have issues with water and making sure the buses are sound and road ready for adverse conditions.
Should a bus stall out on the route, Erickson says they are ready to handle the situation with extra buses in the shop and they are able to get to all of their buses on the route within 15 to 20 minutes. If other measures arise they would call parents to find kids and have them come back in out of the cold.
Once children are at school Neillsville Elementary/Middle School Principal Tim Rueth says measures are taken there as well to keep kids safe. Rueth says they make announcements daily to remind children to dress for the weather. They keep track of temperatures and teachers have a reference to go by as far when to keep children in from recess.
Rueth also said the school has supplies donated by the community like coats, hats, and mittens on hand in case children should need them on cold days.
