(Neillsville, Wis.) Clark County will have a new Register of Deeds next year.Lois Hagedorn told the Executive Committee last week that she will not seek reelection to the post she?s held for 14 years. Hagedorn was first elected in 1999.
Unless you deal with the office on an everyday basis, the Register of Deeds department operates largely behind the scenes.
"We're responsible for recording all the land transactions that occurred in Clark County. We're also responsible for filing all the birth, death and marriages that occur in the county and maintaining those records and supplying them to the public," she says.
During her time in office, Hagedorn oversaw a complete change in how the county goes about recording and distributing information. Hard copies and film have given way to digital files and Internet availability.
"In 2001, we moved away from micro-filming records. We had a film-developing area in our office, we moved away from that and moved to scanning all the real estate records that come into the office," she says. "In 2006...we initiated an on-line system so documents can be received 24-7 on-line."
Some of those documents date back to the mid 1800s, she says.
Hagedorn says it?s time for her to move on after an enjoyable career in county government.
"I'm planning on spending some time with my family. My husband and I want to do some traveling. I've worked for Clark County for 29 years," she notes.
A new Register of Deeds will be elected in November. Would-be candidates can file declarations of candidacy at any time, but can?t start circulating nomination papers until April 15. They must be returned to the County Clerk?s office by June 1st.
