STATE: DAIRY HERD COUNT DIPS

Friday, October 28th, 2011 -- 12:12 PM

The number of dairy herds in Wisconsin has dipped slightly over the past few months.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reports there were 11,916 herds milking during the first week of October. That's a drop of 176 from July's figures.

Last year at this time, there were about 12,600 herds licensed by DATCP.

Wisconsin Ag Connection reports Clark County continues to hold the highest number of herds in the state with 949. Forest County ranks last in the state with two herds, followed by Milwaukee County's three.

The department says about 85-percent of all herds in the Dairy State are registered as Grade A operations.
