GRANTON BACKS OFF WHOLE GRADE SHARING PLAN

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 -- 10:19 AM

There will be high school in Granton next year, after all.

The Granton School Board announced Tuesday night they will no longer pursue whole grade sharing with a neighboring school district for the 2012-13 school year.

School Board President Theresa Hasz read a statement saying the decision was made after consulting with the district?s attorney, who said state law doesn?t explicitly allow for schools to sub-contract with other schools to educate whole grades of students; therefore, the district could be at risk for litigation.

The district announced plans to form an ad hoc committee of district residents, staff and other stakeholders to ?chart their course? for the next five years.

While other districts have experienced declining enrollments, Granton has been especially hard hit in recent years, with their high school enrollment hovering in the mid-50s.
