A new report by UW-Extension shows agriculture has a huge impact on the area economy. The annual Value and Economic Impact report shows agriculture accounts for about $1.5 billion in sales in Clark County, and supports 7,696 jobs?that?s 46% of all the jobs in the county.
And dairy remains the key ingredient. There are 16 dairy processing plants in the county. Each cow generates around $3,900 in on-farm sales to producers. Clark County ranks second in state dairy production and first in the number of cows and dairy farms. It also ranks among the top 20 dairy-producing counties in the entire country.
The study also finds Clark County is more heavily invested in the industry than all but one other county in the state.
The agriculture industry accounts for roughly $403 million of income in Clark County; that is nearly 50% of the total income. Only Lafayette County has a high percentage.
