EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS CASES ON THE RISE

Monday, September 26th, 2011 -- 10:13 AM

Central Wisconsin horse owners are a bit on edge as more animals have been diagnosed with equine encephalitis, a mosquito-borne illness.

There have been 25 confirmed cases in recent weeks in Price, Lincoln, Taylor, Clark, Marathon, and Dunn Counties.

The state veterinarian advises horse owners to call a veterinarian if their horses show any signs of central nervous system disease, such as depression, loss of appetite, drooping eyelids and lower lip, aimless wandering and circling, blindness and sometimes paralysis.

Wisconsin last experienced a large-scale outbreak of EEE in 2001. That's when 69 cases were confirmed.
