THOMPSON IN THE RACE (?)

Monday, September 19th, 2011 -- 11:24 AM

It was long-expected, but now it?s official? sort of: former Governor Tommy Thompson is running for the U.S. Senate.

Appearing on a Milwaukee radio show Monday, Thompson said he had filed the proper paperwork to start fundraising for his campaign to replace Herb Kohl, who is not seeking reelection. He stopped short of officially announcing he was running for the seat.

If elected, Thompson said he planned to focus on entitlement reform.

While on the show, Thompson criticized President Obama's proposed tax moves.

Former Republican Congressman Mark Neumann was the first from the GOP to announce that he is running.

Madison Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is the only Democrat in the race so far. Congressman Ron Kind said last week he would not seek the seat.
