BRF MAN DROWNS IN HAWAII

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 -- 11:45 AM

A 32-year-old Black River Falls man is dead after a scuba diving accident in Hawaii.

Authorities say Chester Stoda was scuba diving and snorkeling with a friend at Kauai's Haena Beach Park Friday afternoon. The friend eventually returned to shore while Stoda remained in the water to snorkel.

A lifeguard watched as Stoda snorkeled and drifted closer in front of the lifeguard stand. About a half hour later, the lifeguard saw that Stoda was about 50 yards offshore.

He swam out and found Stoda unconscious.

Beachgoers retrieved first aid and communications equipment from the lifeguard stand. Medics transported Stoda to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
