NEW SCHOOL YEAR, NEW RULES

Thursday, September 1st, 2011 -- 10:22 AM

Neillsville High School students were welcomed back to school today with a new a rule banning backpacks between classes.

School leaders had concerns about students loading up their backpacks and carrying them from class to class, according to Neillsville administrator John Gaier, who says the backpacks had become a "clutter issue."

"Kids carrying them into classrooms and blocking aisle-ways and during lunch, carrying them down to the lunchroom and we'd get some cluttered aisle-ways there, as well," Gaier says.

Students have three minutes between classes, enough time to return to their lockers and get to their next class. "For the most part, we think that's true," Gaier says.

Health officials have also recommended against allowing students to lug around heavy backpacks.

The backpack policy was already in effect for middle school students.
