PETITION DRIVE AIMS TO BRING GROCERY STORE TO LOYAL

There?s a move afoot to bring a grocery store back to Loyal.Mayor Dave Williams was approached by a party interested in re-opening the store at the corner of County Highway K and State Highway 98, but they want to make sure it would be supported by the community.
Williams launched a petition drive he hopes will convince the would-be store operators to move forward.
"I don't know of any cons," Williams said. "People are very supportive of the idea. Especially a full-service-type store."
The community of just over 1,200 has been without a store for about three years.
Aside from convenience, the store would provide jobs and much-needed tax base, Williams noted.
The petitions can be found at businesses throughout the city. The drive will probably last for a few more weeks.
"It's going to be about mid- to late-September. The petitions are going very well, so I'm kind of playing it by ear, but end of September at the latest," he explained.
After a week of circulation, around 150 people have already signed the petition.
If all goes well, Williams is hopeful there could be some movement to reopen the store by the end of the year.
