SCHOOL BUSES ARE BACK!
Monday, August 29th, 2011 -- 12:22 PM
Students around the state will be heading back to school this week, and that means drivers need to be a little extra cautious. The first day of school in our area will be Thursday, September 1.
"People should not be in a hurry," urges Neillsville School District Transportation Director Dale Erickson. "If you find that a bus is in the area on a road you're traveling to go to work, adjust your schedule."
Neillsville operates ten buses that will be on the road from about 6:40 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the morning and from 3:20 p.m. to about 4:20 p.m. in the afternoon.
"You must stop for a school bus when the school bus is stopped and the stop arm is extended," Erickson explains. "You need to stop farther than 20 feet either before or in back of the bus."
Every year, bus drivers report motorists that make illegal passes. That offense carries a fine of over $300, and more importantly could lead to serious injury or the death of a student.
