PERFECT STORM FACING RURAL SCHOOLS

A [url=https://wistax.org/docs/press_releases/11_0607-combined-ne.pdf]new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance[/url] details a ?perfect storm? of factors conspiring against rural districts.WISTAX notes rural schools begin with sparse populations that are declining even more. Rural districts average about 7.9 students per square mile, compared to 47 for others.
The results are usually longer bus rides that cost about $593 per student, or nearly 50% more than elsewhere.
Rural school enrollments have fallen 7.5% over the past decade, leading to less funding. It?s also led to difficult employment issues as rural schools may only need a half-time teacher, but have struggled to find qualified candidates willing to work half-time.
Open enrollment has become an increasing threat to small schools, as rural districts can?t offer as many advanced courses.
According to WISTAX, rural districts? political voice is also shrinking, with only 19 of 99 assembly districts in primarily rural areas.
