BIOLOGISTS: BACTERIA CAUSED ARBUTUS FISH KILL
Thursday, August 4th, 2011 -- 11:42 AM
Biologists continue to believe a common bacteria caused a fish kill on Lake Arbutus last month. As many as 800 crappies died in the Hatfield lake between July 15 and 17th.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Dan Hatleli says the likely cause was ?columnaris,? a bacteria that affects the gills and can become deadly.
Hateli is still waiting for further confirmation from lab tests, but says the preliminary investigation points to the hot weather and heavy rainfall leading to a columnaris outbreak.
