RETAILERS DO GOOD JOB IN TOBACCO COMPLIANCE CHECKS

Recent compliance checks show Neillsville and Granton businesses are doing a good job preventing minors from purchasing tobacco products.Fifteen compliance checks were performed in the months of June and July.
"We went to fifteen different (retailers) who had a tobacco license with a 17-year-old youth," explains Brittany Boyer of the Clark County Health Department, "and she would go into the store and purchase cigarettes and she didn't have an ID. If they didn't ask for an ID and let her purchase, obviously, they would be non-compliant."
Boyer says all 15 Neillsville and Granton stores passed the compliance checks.
Officials aren?t trying to get businesses in trouble. They just want to make sure they know the rules and are following through, according to Boyer.
"They definitely have to check ID and they're supposed to have a sign in their facility that says no tobacco will be sold to minors," she says.
Other compliance checks are currently being conducted in Loyal and Greenwood with others scheduled for the northern part of Clark County.
