ABBOTSFORD TO LOSE DMV OFFICE? NEILLSVILLE TO KEEP THEIRS?

Monday, July 25th, 2011 -- 11:32 AM

It looks like Neillsville will get to keep their Department of Motor Vehicles office, but Abbotsford won?t keep theirs.

The DMV is developing a plan to comply with a new state now requiring each county has one service station open at least 20 hours per week; only 30 counties currently meet that requirement.

Clark County is currently served by two stations: one in Abbotsford that?s open the 3rd Thursday of every month, and one in Neillsville that?s only open the 4th Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September and November.

The DMV says they can only afford to keep one location open.

Though the plans are tentative, Abbotsford?s service station is earmarked for closure. The DMV office in Stanley is also on the chopping block.

Under the plan, Neillsville's office will be open an addition 14.25 hours per week.

The DMV expects the changes should be ready to roll out by the end of January 2012.

Driver license and ID products are good for eight years, minimizing the need to travel to a customer service location. Once the changes are made, weekly DMV driver license and ID card services will increase by more than 625 hours ? that equates to more than 32,000 hours of increased DMV services annually.
