SUDER DEFENDS: DELAYED PAYMENT TO JOBLESS WILL BE GOOD FOR COMPANIES

Thursday, July 21st, 2011 -- 2:05 PM

A local state representative is defending an Assembly vote that could cost unemployed workers up to $56-million in federally-funded benefits.

Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) says he?s trying to protect companies from higher fees by making the unemployed wait a week before collecting unemployment checks.

Not even Senate Republicans support the Assembly plan.

Senate Bill 147 made Wisconsin workers eligible for an additional 13 weeks of federally-funded extended unemployment benefits and eliminated the one week waiting period for initially receiving unemployment benefits.

But, Assembly Republicans attached the waiting period to their bill, which was approved Wednesday.

Now the Senate will have to approve an identical version. They have no timetable to do so.
