NEILLSVILLE EXTENDS PUBLIC WORKS UNION CONTRACT

Thursday, June 30th, 2011 -- 12:15 PM

The Neillsville City Council approved a contract with their public works union Tuesday night, hours before a state law significantly curtailing union bargaining powers went into effect.

Under the contract, which will be effective retroactive to January 1st, 2011, the 8 city workers will see a complete salary freeze, but won?t have to contribute 5.8% of their salary to the Wisconsin Retirement System.

They?ll also continue to pay 10% of their health insurance premium.

Members of the city?s police union are also protected from having to pay the increased pension and health insurance contributions; non-union employees will have to pay the increased contributions, but it?s unclear when they will start.

The public works union contract will expire on December 31st, 2011.
