CLARK CO. BOARD WOULD LIKE ELECTED OFFICIALS TO BE NON-PARTISAN

Friday, June 24th, 2011 -- 11:26 AM

If the Clark County Board had their druthers, elected county officials would no longer represent a party.

While it?s far from being law, the board voted 15-13 in favor of a resolution authored by board member Steve Okonek of Chili requesting the state constitution be amended to move the election of county constitutional officers from the partisan November elections, to the non-partisan spring elections.

Okonek said positions like county clerk, register of deeds and clerk of court have no partisan functions and their party affiliation can cause the perception of a conflict of interest.

County Clerk Chris Jensen said she didn?t support the plan. She preferred the elections remain in the fall, when turnout is traditionally much higher.

The request will be sent to area lawmakers.
