'ALWAYS LOST' EXHIBIT VISITS THE HIGHGROUND

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 -- 9:14 AM

We hear the numbers, but it?s hard to comprehend the amount of lives lost in the War on Terror. An exhibit at The Highground?s Learning Center makes it real.

The Learning Center is hosting Always Lost: A Meditation on War. The centerpiece of the display is a collection of panels with the pictures of soldiers killed in action.

"We have twenty-four panels with 192 soldiers on each panel," explains exhibit coordinator June Berg. "They're about 1,500 soldiers behind. There have been over 5,500 (KIAs), to date."

That number includes around 116 Wisconsin soldiers, she says.

People that see the display, which stretches over several walls, are overwhelmed.

"They've heard of the KIAs, this puts a face and a number to each and everyone of them. This really blows people away that there have been this many and then some, because there are so many that aren't here yet," Berg says.

On top of the panels that feature small snapshots of the KIAs, the exhibit also includes 20 Pulitzer Prize-winning combat photos that tell the story of life at war and a number of quotes, poems and other writings concerning war.

They?ll have the display through July 9th. The Learning Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
