SEN. KOHL WON'T SEEK REELECTION IN '12

Friday, May 13th, 2011 -- 2:22 PM

Wisconsin will have a new U.S. Senator after the November 2012 elections.

U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) said Friday that he would not run for a fifth term in the U.S. Senate.

The 76-year-old was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988.

Kohl said his health was good, and he had no intention of retiring from public life.

Kohl?s announced has opened the floodgates to a number of would-be candidates.
For Republicans, there?s a lot of speculation surrounding Janesville Rep. Paul Ryan. State Assembly Speak Jeff Fitzgerald said he would consider a run if Ryan doesn?t. Former Senate and Gubernatorial candidate Mark Neumann was also quick to voice interest in running.

On the Democratic side, candidates might include ex-senator Russ Feingold, U.S. House members Ron Kind of La Crosse and Tammy Baldwin of Madison and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
