What a difference a year makes![i]
Wisconsin Ag Connection[/i] reports today that one year ago the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop summary noted that the two-inches of rain received over the weekend wasn't enough to combat the dry soils for development; and that 51 percent of the corn and 96 percent of the oats were already planted.
That's not the case this year. On Monday, the agency said corn planting is now at just one percent complete statewide, with only 17 percent of the oat crop now in the ground.
Crop reporters say warm, dry weather is desperately needed to bring soil temperatures up and dry fields out. Frost was reported as still being in the ground in some areas across the northern part of the state. Many reports indicated little to no fieldwork being done the previous week as fields were too wet to get into them.
As of Sunday, spring tillage slowly continued over the past week, with 11 percent reported complete--well behind the previous year of 70 percent.
