COMING SOON: MILEAGE TAX?
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 -- 11:17 AM
An interesting story from across the river. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is looking for 500 people to test technology that could someday be used to collect a mileage-based user fee. The volunteers will be given smart phones with a GPS application that has been programmed to allow them to submit information.
The DOT relies heavily on gas tax revenue to maintain roads, but predicts they'll get decreased revenue from the tax as more fuel-efficient vehicles become more popular.
Mileage-based user fees, where drivers pay the state based on the distance traveled, could be used to supplement or replace the gas tax.
The research is scheduled to end by December 2012.
