FEDS TRY TO REMOVE WOLVES FROM ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST

Federal officials say they?ll try again to remove Wisconsin gray wolves from the endangered species list.The U-S Fish-and-Wildlife Service said Friday that the wolf populations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan have recovered - and they no longer need federal protections. About 4,000 wolves are roaming in the three states, including about 700 in Wisconsin.
The government has tried several times in the last few years to de-list the gray wolf - but it's been stopped every time by lawsuits from various interests.
?The DNR has been prompting and urging the de-listing,? explains DNR Mammalian Ecologist Adrian Wydeven. ?We filed a petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service a year ago requesting they start a de-listing process. We're looking forward to having wolves removed from the Endangered Species List and taking over management.?
Congress recently approved a bill to remove federal protections for wolves in five states in the Western and Northwest U-S.
