WINTER'S OVER! (SORT OF)
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 -- 12:10 PM
While history tells us we?ll probably see some more cold and snow, winter is officially over for forecasters.Meteorological winter runs from December 1st through February 28th. You guessed it: it was colder and snowier than normal.
According to the National Weather Service La Crosse, the average temperature at La Crosse was 16.9 degrees. This was 3.1 degrees colder than the 1971-2000 average of 20.0 degrees. The average maximum temperature was 25.0 degrees. This was 4.2 degrees colder than the average.
Around 54 inches of snow fell during that time?a whopping two-feet above normal, making it the third snowiest meteorological winter on record behind only 1970-71 and 2007-08. Three of the last four winters were among the six snowiest meteorological winters on record.
This winter had the fifth greatest average snow depth for a meteorological winter...and it was the greatest since the 1978-79.
