NEILLSVILLE COUPLE FALL PRAY TO IDENTITY THEFT
Friday, February 18th, 2011 -- 12:18 PM
A Neillsville couple is thankful they don?t have to pay for two expensive cell phones after their identity was apparently stolen.According to police reports, the couple says "someone, somehow" got some of their personal information and used it to purchase four phones. Two of the phones were shipped to the wife?s former address in Neillsville. Two other Blackberry phones were to be shipped to New York.
AT&T had told the couple the phones sent to them were free, but they were responsible to pay $1,100 for the two phones shipped to New York.
The couple tells us they were lucky to catch the purchases in time and had AT&T cancel the orders. They searched their credit report and found the identity thieves had tried to do the same thing with a different cell phone company. They say it goes to show how quickly identity theft can occur.
The matter is still under investigation.
