POSTAL SERVICE EYES MORE OFFICE CLOSINGS
Monday, January 31st, 2011 -- 12:20 PM
As the U.S. Postal Service deals with a huge budget shortfall, it looks like more rural offices may be closed. The Wall Street Journal reports that, beginning in March, the agency will start the process of closing as many as 2,000 post offices. It already planned to slash 491 locations at the end of last year, including 4 in Wisconsin.
The Post Office is also reviewing another 16,000?half of the nation's existing post offices?that are operating at a deficit. The agency would need to get government approval, because the law currently allows them to close locations only for maintenance.
The Post Office lost about $8.5 billion in fiscal year 2010.
