The recount for the 31st State Senate District race proved costly. The La Crosse Tribune reports the nine counties in the district spent nearly $16,000. Republican Ed Thompson, the candidate who petitioned for the count, paid about $1,500.
Thompson gained 51 votes, but still lost by 403 votes to Democratic first-term incumbent Kathleen Vinehout.
Thompson defended his decision for a recount, saying the vote was close.
Jackson County incurred the highest expenses at $5,000. They spent three days recounting 6,800 by hand. Clark County, which only has two towns in the district, spent the least, about $50.
